<span style="color: #999999;"><span style="font-size: small;">Un demi-siècle. C'est le temps qu'il aura fallu à l'artiste américain Michael Heizer pour bâtir sa "City". Un demi-siècle à creuser, terrasser, construire, aplanir, démolir, reconstruire, déplacer, replacer, soulever, arpenter, creuser à nouveau, puis construire, construire encore, construire toujours. Un demi-siècle de labeur. Un travail de titan. Un travail de fourmis surtout. "City" n'a rien à voir avec l'éponyme quartier londonien, c'en serait même l'exact opposé en termes de bruit et de fréquentation. Dans cette sculpture-ville, pas d'ordinateur, pas d'écran plat, pas de façade de verre, pas de trader pressé, pas de berline de luxe, pas de restaurant, pas de vitrine éclairée la nuit. Place aux éléments primordiaux: la terre et le ciel. Tout le reste semble ici avoir été pulvérisé, y compris cette mystérieuse ligne d'horizon sans début ni fin qui nous interpelle depuis la nuit des temps, pulvérisé comme s'il s'agissait de nous ramener à ces jours sinistres d'août 1945. "City" n'est donc pas une ville à proprement parler mais pourrait bien être une sculpture de ville morte. L'oeuvre s'intitule ville, s'apparente à de l'architecture, mais le résultat c'est bien de la sculpture (Heizer l'a suffisamment répété). Une sculpture mémorielle donc. Un monument si l'on veut ; comme on en trouve aux quatre coins du monde, érigés depuis toujours et par toutes les civilisations connues à ce jour. Certains vont jusqu'à parler d'un mausolée de Heizer, mais laissons-leur la paternité de ce fantasme disproportionné. Car si cette oeuvre est réellement un mausolée dans l'esprit de l'artiste, alors nous sommes tous concernés par cette archéologie du futur. </span></span><br />

<span style="color: #999999;"><span style="font-size: small;">Qu'il est bon de se remémorer cette </span>déclaration renversante de Jan Dibbets de 1970 : « Il y a un pas qui va plus loin que l'art conceptuel, car l'on peut donner à ce que l'on pense, ou ce qui existe en tant que concept, une réalité visuelle » [1]. <br /><br />De la même façon, on pourrait déclarer aujourd'hui devant le <i>re-enactement</i> de cette œuvre de Michael Heizer: il y a un pas qui va plus loin que l'art minimal, car l'on peut donner à ce que l'on montre, ou ce qui existe en tant qu'objet, une réalité émotionnelle. <br /><br />Et elle est là, peut-être là, la quintessence du Land Art, ce mouvement sans chef de file ni manifeste né autour de 1968 dont personne n'a encore jamais réussi à accoucher d'une définition qui tienne la route plus de quelques secondes — grand bien nous fasse ! <br /><br />Car, oui, faut-il le rappeler, notre credo est plus que jamais d'actualité: « Le Land Art est une pure fiction, voilà pourquoi nous l’observons. » et Michael Heizer a bien raison de fuir cette étiquette dont tant de critiques ou de journalistes l'affublent depuis des lustres et souvent sans la moindre précaution. <br /><br />Avec <i>Compression Line (1968-2016)</i>, mais comme finalement avec bien d'autres œuvres qu'il réalise (pour ne pas dire construit) depuis un demi-siècle, l'artiste américain ne nous propose pas de nous pâmer devant une forme, si esthétique soit-elle, si belle qu'on puisse la trouver, mais nous livre un pur concept matérialisé sur terre à la sobriété sans grand équivalent. <br /><br />Que quoi nous parle-t-il ? De quelle émotion se fait-il le passeur ? Où se joue son art et rien que son art ? Pour répondre à ces questions, parmi d'autres, il suffit selon </span><span style="color: #999999;">Heizer de faire l'expérience de l’œuvre</span><span style="color: #999999;">. La photographie n'est là que pour nous donner envie de faire le déplacement, pour nous informer que cette œuvre existe, là-bas, quelque part, et qu'elle nous attend. <br /><br />Mais la photographie, disons la bonne photographie, a parfois le pouvoir de révéler des choses avant que nous en fassions physiquement l'expérience. En l'espèce, nous pressentons </span><span style="color: #999999;"><span style="color: #999999;">déjà, </span>ici, en regardant cette prise de vue au drone de <i>Compression Line (1968-2016)</i>, l'histoire qui se joue dans cette perforation du sol consolidée par des plaques d'acier... <br /><br />La terre, encore la terre, toujours la terre, cette Terre sur laquelle nous marchons sans toujours très bien nous rendre compte des forces telluriques qu'elle recèle, de la quantité d'énergie contenue toujours prête à jaillir des tréfonds, de cette gigantesque puissance d'effroi à laquelle nous sommes virtuellement tous soumis.</span><br />
