10-month construction | 10 mois de travaux

Over the course of nearly a year, we followed the construction of Michael Heizer's Levitated Mass at LACMA. The finished work is composed of a 456-foot-long slot constructed on LACMA's campus, over which is placed a 340-ton granite megalith. (25/06/12, source)

With crowds, speeches, and even a rare appearance by its normally reclusive creator, Michael Heizer's "Levitated Mass" finally opened on Sunday, June 24, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The installation of the 340-ton megalith followed an 11-day slow-motion journey in March that that drew tens of thousands of spectators and turned the route into a giant celebration. As the huge rock makes its way from Riverside to LACMA, it made a stop in Bixby Knolls, a neighborhood in Long Beach. The Bixby Knolls Business Association created a party to celebrate the rock's brief stop, with live music, a DJ, Alpine mountaineers, live art, crafts for kids, food, and other festivities. Le catalogue passionnant et abondamment illustré présente l'histoire du Land art depuis son émergence, au cours des années 1960, et ce jusqu’en 1974. Ouvrage publié à l’occasion de la première exposition de grande envergure sur le Land art [au Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles], ce livre retrace la naissance de ces élans qui ont conduit les artistes à utiliser la terre comme matériau, le territoire comme médium, et à installer leurs œuvres sur des sites éloignés, au-delà du contexte habituel de l’art. « Ends of the Earth » revient sur les nombreux mythes qui circulent autour du Land art – à savoir qu'il s'agissait au départ un phénomène nord-américain, et avant tout une pratique sculpturale dépassant le strict cadre du système de l'art. Des essais écrits par d'éminents jeunes chercheurs ouvriront de nouvelles perspectives sur l'émergence du Land art, notamment son lien intrinsèque avec les médias, ses rêves d’ailleurs, l'attirance pour les friches, et les problèmes inhérents à une étude historique de l’art in-situ ou éphémère. Le livre comprendra également une série de réflexions de curateurs, critiques et marchands d’art majeurs, qui ont contribué à faire du Land Art à la fois une pratique et un discours dans les années 1960 et 1970. The fascinating and generously illustrated catalogue documents the history of Land art from its emergence during the early 1960s through 1974. A companion volume to the first large-scale exhibition on Land art [at Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles], this book traces the emergence of the artistic impulses to use the earth as material, land as medium, and to locate works in remote sites, beyond familiar art contexts. “Ends of the Earth” challenges many myths about Land art–that it was primarily a North American phenomenon, that it was foremost a sculptural practice, and that it exceeds the confines of the art system. Essays by leading young scholars will offer new insights into Land art's emergence, including its intrinsic connection to media, its dreams of an elsewhere, the attraction of wastelands, and the problems inherent in a historical evaluation of site-specific or ephemeral art. The book will also include a series of reflections from the major curators, critics, and dealers who helped to make Land art both as work and discourse in the 1960s and 1970s. Source
