The Rock,a 340-ton granite boulder, part of artist Michael Heizer's sculpture, Levitated Mass, makes its way though Koreatown in Los Angeles, while on the way to its final home at LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art). This is the left turn onto Wilshire Blvd. The street lights had to be removed because of the size of the vehicle that it took to transport the boulder. The Ceremony (excerpt) | La Cérémonie (extrait)
With crowds, speeches, and even a rare appearance by its normally reclusive creator, Michael Heizer's "Levitated Mass" finally opened on Sunday, June 24, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The installation of the 340-ton megalith followed an 11-day slow-motion journey in March that that drew tens of thousands of spectators and turned the route into a giant celebration. As the huge rock makes its way from Riverside to LACMA, it made a stop in Bixby Knolls, a neighborhood in Long Beach. The Bixby Knolls Business Association created a party to celebrate the rock's brief stop, with live music, a DJ, Alpine mountaineers, live art, crafts for kids, food, and other festivities.
