The Rock,a 340-ton granite boulder, part of artist Michael Heizer's sculpture, Levitated Mass, makes its way though Koreatown in Los Angeles, while on the way to its final home at LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art). This is the left turn onto Wilshire Blvd. The street lights had to be removed because of the size of the vehicle that it took to transport the boulder. Emmert International, a firm that specializes in heavy haul transportation, coordinated the move from Riverside County to Los Angeles. Enjoy... (10/03/12, source)

Over the course of nearly a year, we followed the construction of Michael Heizer's Levitated Mass at LACMA. The finished work is composed of a 456-foot-long slot constructed on LACMA's campus, over which is placed a 340-ton granite megalith. (25/06/12, source)

The Ceremony (excerpt) | La Cérémonie (extrait)
With crowds, speeches, and even a rare appearance by its normally reclusive creator, Michael Heizer's "Levitated Mass" finally opened on Sunday, June 24, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The installation of the 340-ton megalith followed an 11-day slow-motion journey in March that that drew tens of thousands of spectators and turned the route into a giant celebration. As the huge rock makes its way from Riverside to LACMA, it made a stop in Bixby Knolls, a neighborhood in Long Beach. The Bixby Knolls Business Association created a party to celebrate the rock's brief stop, with live music, a DJ, Alpine mountaineers, live art, crafts for kids, food, and other festivities.
« Gary Leonard photographie Los Angeles depuis 40 ans. (traduction OBSART)
Sometimes, when you load your emails, one of them can really make you over(size)joyed. Many thanks to Gary Leonard for sending us this picture which is worth its weight in gold. This is the truck of Emmert International company, specially built to move Michael Heizer's Rock to LACMA.
“Gary Leonard has been photographing Los Angeles for 40 years. He first made a name for chronicling the city's punk clubs and nightlife. He's centered mostly in Downtown now, and has a gallery called Take My Picture on the same block of Broadway as the Orpheum Theater and Broadway Bar. His long-running series Take My Picture Gary Leonard is now based at LA Observed, appearing on Thursdays.” Source

Ends of the Earth | Aux confins de la terre

Ends of the Earth:
Land Art to 1974
Philipp Kaiser and Miwon Kwon (authors), Tom Holert, Julian Meyers and Emily Scott (contributors)

The fascinating and generously illustrated catalogue documents the history of Land art from its emergence during the early 1960s through 1974. A companion volume to the first large-scale exhibition on Land art [at Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles], this book traces the emergence of the artistic impulses to use the earth as material, land as medium, and to locate works in remote sites, beyond familiar art contexts. “Ends of the Earth” challenges many myths about Land art–that it was primarily a North American phenomenon, that it was foremost a sculptural practice, and that it exceeds the confines of the art system. Essays by leading young scholars will offer new insights into Land art's emergence, including its intrinsic connection to media, its dreams of an elsewhere, the attraction of wastelands, and the problems inherent in a historical evaluation of site-specific or ephemeral art. The book will also include a series of reflections from the major curators, critics, and dealers who helped to make Land art both as work and discourse in the 1960s and 1970s. Source
